EQUIPPED TRAINING: STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS AT EVERY SITE

Leaders and volunteers from across our sites gathered for our Feed the Need Equipped Training. It was incredibly encouraging to see nearly 100% participation! Seeing so many people take time out of their weekend to come together, learn, and grow was a powerful reminder of the heart behind this mission.

The focus of this year’s training was not on site logistics or food, but relationships.

At Feed the Need, we say “The burger is just the tool” to bring people to the table, but relationships are what truly change lives. Every week, volunteers serve meals in communities across Bastrop County, but the heart of the mission goes far beyond the food. It’s about slowing down, listening to people’s stories, praying with them, and actively walking alongside them.

Throughout the training, we spent time walking through the roles that make each site function well—from Site Coordinators and Servers to Food Purchasers and Grill Teams. Volunteers worked together to identify who fills each role at their site and to discuss how each position can influence the team’s culture.

One of the most encouraging parts of the day was seeing several volunteers step forward to take on new responsibilities. As our sites continue to grow, it takes faithful believers who are willing to serve, guide others, and invest in relationships.

The training concluded with a time for application, where each site worked through four questions designed to strengthen teamwork and clarity around roles. These conversations began during the training, but their real purpose was to continue at each site as teams put them into practice week after week.

More than anything, this training served as a reminder of the calling we share as the Church. Through simple acts of service and intentional relationships, our volunteers are living out what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in their communities.

We are deeply grateful for every volunteer who gives their time, energy, and heart to serve others so faithfully. Whether through Feed the Need or in other ways within their communities, our hope is that believers continue stepping into that calling—loving people well, building relationships, and pointing others to Christ.

FROM COMFORT TO COURAGE: GROWING VOLUNTEER LEADERS

At Feed the Need Missions, we have the privilege of seeing incredible transformations in our volunteers every day. What begins as hesitant participation often blossoms into bold leadership through intentional training and a supportive community. Recognizing the importance of equipping volunteers for effective ministry, we have developed Feed the Need University—a monthly training initiative that fosters spiritual growth, builds leadership skills, and encourages meaningful engagement at our weekly sites.

Initially, many volunteers join Feed the Need Missions eager to help but uncertain of their own abilities to engage others spiritually or lead conversations effectively. Common hesitations include fear of public speaking, uncertainty in handling tough conversations, or doubts about their biblical knowledge. Through Feed the Need University, we intentionally create a welcoming environment that addresses these concerns head-on, helping volunteers grow from timid participants into confident servant-leaders.

Each session is carefully crafted around core biblical principles, practical leadership insights, and interactive discussions designed to encourage immediate application. Volunteers leave empowered with the tools and confidence needed to lead meaningful interactions and ministry moments. They learn the significance of asking open-ended questions, actively listening, and offering prayer, ultimately enhancing their ability to connect deeply with guests and fellow volunteers.

We have seen remarkable outcomes. Volunteers who once avoided eye contact during prayer now eagerly volunteer to lead group discussions. Those previously hesitant to initiate conversations with guests now proactively seek opportunities to connect and encourage. Each transformation enriches the individual volunteer’s experience and profoundly impacts our community outreach. Through consistent, intentional training, Feed the Need University is cultivating courageous, compassionate leaders who embody the heart of our mission.

TRAINING FOR KINGDOM IMPACT: FEED THE NEED UNIVERSITY

Feed the Need Missions has historically conducted extensive training through lengthy workshops and conferences. However, recognizing volunteers’ busy lives and the need for ongoing, practical training, we have adopted a new, innovative approach: Feed the Need University. This monthly training model provides accessible, bite-sized sessions designed for maximum impact in minimal time.

Our recent focus has been the “Table Talk” curriculum, which unpacks the foundational principles behind our method of ministry. Understanding the “why” is crucial for volunteers, enabling them to appreciate the deeper purpose behind seemingly simple acts, like serving meals or facilitating conversations. Each session includes targeted teachings, practical tools, and three core questions that guide reflection, group discussion, and immediate application.

The sessions occur directly before volunteers begin serving at weekly sites, creating a timely opportunity to prepare and align our hearts with God’s spiritual purpose. Volunteers learn practical skills for leading discussions effectively, nurturing relationships, and ministering with humility and grace. We emphasize servant leadership and a community-focused mindset, reinforcing the belief that volunteers and guests alike have valuable insights and spiritual contributions.

Upcoming sessions will delve deeper into team-building and viewing each site as a robust platform for ongoing discipleship. We are excited about the potential of this training approach to multiply our impact, transforming the weekly cookout from a meal service into a powerful discipleship and community-building tool. The positive feedback and visible growth in our volunteers confirm the effectiveness and necessity of this continuous, focused training.

Empowering Compassion: A Recap of January’s Volunteer Training

This past Saturday, January 20th, marked a pivotal day for Feed the Need Missions, as we hosted our largest training session to date. Over 88 individuals gathered, eager to learn and engage with our mission. This remarkable turnout is a testament to the growing commitment and enthusiasm within our community.

Volunteerism is the lifeblood of many nonprofits, and at Feed the Need Missions, we are blessed with over 400 incredible volunteers. Their dedication is the driving force behind our success. Regular training and the annual Fired Up Conference are vital to advancing our mission and vision, and this event was a step forward in that ongoing journey.

When asked about takeaways from the training, one of our volunteers shared, “Understanding why the processes are so important was my biggest takeaway. It’s easy to get lost in the routine at a site, but the training realigns our focus and reminds us of the do’s and don’ts. It puts everything back into perspective.”

A crucial component of our training involved teaching volunteers how to witness to others and share the gospel. Through interactive exercises like the 15-Second Testimony method and guidance on what not to say, we aimed to make evangelism more approachable and impactful.

One volunteer stated, “There’s no reason not to share your testimony anymore. Learning the 15-Second Testimony method made it come alive–it’s so real for me now. Being taught how to respond to others when they share how they feel was an eye opener and it has challenged me.”

Our training sessions are designed with specific goals to improve performance and deepen understanding. Our hope and prayer are that this training achieved just that. As one volunteer aptly summarized, “It’s a great reminder and a refreshing perspective.”

We are already preparing for our next training session in July, which will continue to focus on mobilizing believers to feed people physically and spiritually in their communities. This session will further emphasize building disciple-making relationships, a core aspect of our mission.

As we reflect on the success of this training, our hearts are filled with gratitude and hope. With a strengthened and inspired team of volunteers, Feed the Need Missions is more equipped than ever to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Join us in this journey of compassion and community transformation, one meal and one soul at a time.
