TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 6

What is new with Table Talk?

A little over a month ago, we started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. Last week, we visited Lexington to see how the volunteers see the core value of servant leadership playing out at their site. For our final week of this series, we visited La Grange to discuss stewardship.

Week 6: Stewardship, La Grange Site

The resources Feed the Need is blessed with are to be used with integrity and accountability to those who have given generously to the mission, bringing glory to God’s Kingdom. The dictionary defines stewardship as the act of taking care of or managing something. With that in mind, we asked everyone to think about what they believe stewardship means for the site, particularly regarding resources.

We also discussed how integrity and accountability play vital roles in the stewardship of site resources & asked everyone to consider these questions:

  • Does the importance of a resource matter where integrity is concerned?
  • When someone donates to Feed the Need Missions, what do you think is the expectation of how well it will be used or managed?
  • Looking forward, what will you do to make sure the resources you use are used with integrity and accountability?

Here’s some of what our La Grange volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

Johnny

When reflecting on how stewardship impacts the site, Johnny said, “I see the stewarding of resources here helping us build relationships at the site—with other volunteers and with the guests coming to receive food and prayers.”

Table Talk has made a lot of our volunteers understand the importance of being in the Word, praying, and showing love to others. Johnny explained, “A lot of the things we’ve been discussing, I already do every day. I read the Bible daily, but extending Godly love to others daily is often a struggle. But I’ve come to see the importance of giving people around me second chances because God gives us second chances even when we don’t deserve them, so why aren’t I offering the same to the people around me?”

Often, when people are down on their luck, knowing someone truly sees and hears them can go a long way. Extending grace and care to others can be a way to begin journeying alongside someone, even if it’s just once a week; you get to pray with them through their struggles, celebrate their praises, and you get to be a witness to their growth. When we read the Bible daily, spend meaningful time in prayer, and show love to others, God starts showing up in some pretty amazing ways.

Kim

Stewardship is crucial to any mission for Jesus Christ, as He calls us to be faithful and responsible stewards. Kim explained, “Whether it’s people, the trailer, or food—a lot of the stuff at the site costs money, so being a good steward here is no different than if it were my own money or resources. The trailer and the money that have been donated to our site are resources we want to steward wisely. By giving back to our community, we hope those who have partnered with us can see the tangible impact of their generosity and the positive changes it brings about.”

“Through this Table Talk series, I’m also learning that servant leadership is a great way to steward the people here. Sometimes, I have to step back to let someone else in and walk beside them as they learn and grow—it’s been a journey of learning to let others go before you.”

Kim shared a story that highlights the impact of volunteers’ efforts: “I just had a lady come straight from work and tell me how thankful she was that we are here because she knows that week in, week out she can count on coming here for not just food, but for spiritual support. She said, ‘I just love how y’all pray for me.’ We get that a lot. People appreciate that someone cares enough to listen and to pray with them.”

Tuning in and listening for the urgings of the Holy Spirit is hard enough. But, an even harder thing to do is to act on those urgings.  Kim shared, “I often pray for God to help me be a good steward of the Holy Spirit; for God to bring the right person to my line and give me the words to say to help speak into their life. It’s a testament to what we’re doing when your prayer moves someone to tears, and they tell you they didn’t even know they needed that—God knew.”

Bryer

Bryer is one of our youngest volunteers. He shared how he sees stewardship: “Stewardship, to me, means helping people out. I’m not really the best at stewarding my things, but my dad is the one really teaching me the most. He’s taught me to be responsible, take care of your business, and help people out if they need it.”

Bryer envisions a world transformed by the simple act of extending love to one another, just as Jesus did. He explained, “It’s important to help others because if I help this person, there’s a chance that they’ll want to help someone else out, and that makes a whole chain of people helping people.”

Stewardship of resources is a critical aspect of our site’s functionality. It’s particularly encouraging to see someone as young as Bryer grasping the importance of taking care of our resources. “If we didn’t take care of all of the things out here, like the trailer or the tables, they would rust or fall apart, and nobody would want to come. Then the whole point of why we’re out here wouldn’t be happening—no one would be coming to the site to get a free burger or learn about Jesus.”

Bryer leaves us with some encouraging words about our weekly efforts: “I think Feed the Need is changing people’s lives spiritually and mentally.”

At our weekly sites, you walk side by side with people, which allows you to see the needs. Table Talk helps you build and strengthen your relationship with God, and when you consistently work on your faith walk, that begins to overflow into your community.

If you have never been to a site, we encourage you to check it out. Feel free to hang around for Table Talk to experience it for yourself, and if you feel compelled, stay and volunteer. The beauty of our time around the table is that you not only spend time with the Lord but also get to encourage others on their spiritual journey.

We hope to see you at one of our weekly sites soon!

“This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”

TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 5

What is new with Table Talk?

We started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. Last week, we visited Bastrop South to see how the volunteers see the core value of simplicity playing out at their site. This week, we visited Lexington to discuss servant leadership.

Week 5: Servant Leadership, Lexington Site

We must always approach our roles with an attitude of service. We are not there to be served but to serve others in a way that is contagious so that none may boast of their own achievements.

Jesus talked about the importance of service in Matthew 20:26-28: “On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

We asked everyone to think about the roles they have served in at the site and how they can lead others while they serve. The goal of this week was to get everyone thinking about how our words and actions matter in everything we do–someone is always watching.

Here’s some of what our Lexington volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

Tynan

The whole idea of servant leadership revolves around the attitude of service to others. Even Jesus’ time on earth was spent in the service of others: washing feet, teaching, healing, and simply helping. Tynan spoke about how serving others at the site each week is a reflection of God. “The simplicity of this whole operation, yeah it’s a lot of work—and it’s hot, but at the end of the day, nothing we did out here compares to what He did for us on the cross. So, if we can bring His message to our guests through our hard work and service, that demonstrates just a small piece of what Jesus did for us.”

Tynan often comes to the site straight from getting off work or heading to work. He talked about why it is important for him to be consistent each week. “Coming here every Tuesday is part of my routine. No matter if I can only come for a short time and cook, help set up, or help on the line that’s the little piece I give in service to others as a demonstration of what Jesus did for all of us.”

Megan

Megan shared how serving others at the site each week impacts her daily life. “Servant Leadership has brought me closer to Jesus. I’m a very shy person, so being around the volunteers and the guests and helping new people learn the process of the site has really brought me out of my shell and made me more confident in interacting with people.”

When you serve consistently, you get to see the changes happening around you. Whether it is the guests or the volunteers (or both), you witness God moving. “Guests come here week after week with prayer requests, and it’s really cool to see those requests being answered or shifted to lesser needs. It’s also neat to see guests go from resisting talking about Jesus to asking questions. I’ve also seen this happen with volunteers.”

Megan shared how simply wearing a Feed the Need Missions shirt out of state opened the door to invite others into what we are doing. “I was recently in Oklahoma, and I was wearing my Feed the Need shirt, and several times, I had someone ask me what it was. So, I had some cool moments where I got to share about the mission.”

Savannah

Savannah is one of our teen volunteers who recently graduated high school. She shared with us how servant leadership has impacted her life. “Servant Leadership, for me, is stepping out of my comfort zone and stepping up to teach others how to share the gospel and how to serve the site well. It’s also an act of faithfulness, and showing others how you serve God through the simplest things.”

“I feel like people see me because I’m young and say, ‘If she can do it, I can do it.’ I was in a place where I didn’t want to pray with people or even talk to people, I was happy just being on the line. But someone pushed me out of my comfort zone, and now I get to push others out of their comfort zones and show them that it’s going to be okay. God’s got it. Because I was pushed to do more, I’ve been able to grow really strong bonds with the people here through prayer, and they’ve inspired me by some of the hardships they’ve had to go through, and I’ve been able to pray for them and watch them grow.”

Savannah has a challenge for each of us: “Get out of your comfort zone! God doesn’t want you to be comfortable—you’ll witness so many other things if you just move. So, I want to encourage others to just GO! Go be uncomfortable and watch God move.”

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests but rather to the interests of others.”

TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 4

What is new with Table Talk?

We started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. Last week, we visited LBA to see how the volunteers see the core value of mercy playing out at their site. This week, we visited Bastrop South to discuss simplicity.

Week 4: Simplicity, Bastrop South Site

The more we complicate ministry, the more we get in the way. Keep to the heart of the ministry of feeding people physically and spiritually in everything we do. We asked everyone to consider these questions:

  • What are the advantages of keeping things simple?
  • Does simpler necessarily mean faster?
  • What do we do at our site to maintain simplicity?

Here’s some of what our Bastrop South volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

House of Hope

House of Hope has been volunteering at the Bastrop South Site for several years. They faithfully serve every week, prepping the vegetables, wrapping hamburgers and hot dogs, and participating in devotion. A few of the ladies shared why they love Table Talk. Michelle said, “It’s a really interactive form of Bible study. It gives us time to fellowship together, study the Word, and hear other opinions and points of view.” When asked how Table Talk has impacted the site, she explained, “I’ve seen shy people joining in more, especially having the smaller group discussions. Everyone seems to participate a lot more; I think it’s getting people out of their shells.”

We all have hardships and varying paths we must walk in life, and these experiences bring unique views to the table when discussing the gospel and the importance of building relationships. Brittanie said, “I like the fact that we have different walks of life here. At this site, I get all kinds of views: wisdom from the elders, a street view, and family views. That’s why I enjoy Table Talk.” When the gospel is simple and uncomplicated, it is easy for anyone from all walks of life to share it with others.

The ladies also mirrored Asher from Smithville, stating, “There’s always two right answers to anything: Feed the Need or Jesus.”

Kim

One of the unifying responses we have heard from all the sites so far is how Table Talk has made people more accountable. Kim said, “I’m reminded every week that I have room to improve; God gives me grace.”

It can be scary to feel inadequate. We have all felt that at one time or another, but Table Talk is crafted to allow anyone, at any point in their spiritual journey, to get involved and begin growing. Kim revealed, “I’ve seen our volunteers and guests go from sitting back and not participating to actually getting involved in the conversation. I see people growing in their faith walk through Table Talk.”

The Bastrop South Site exemplifies simplicity. Compared to our other sites, it functions with much less from an operations standpoint. They do not have a trailer, and Primera graciously allows them to store things in the church and use their grills out back. Between the minimal set-up and the faithfulness of the volunteers who do their jobs efficiently, Bastrop South lives out simplicity week after week.

“I’ve been volunteering for Feed the Need for almost ten years, and I love it—I wouldn’t give it up. You leave here blessing so many that it’s hard to want to give that up, but what I walk away with is worth so much more.”

Dennis

Dennis echoed so many voices that have expressed how Table Talk has made them more accountable. Accountability is so important. We need that group of people we meet with weekly to remind each other how important it is to be in the Word, to pray intentionally, and to love others.

Dennis shared how Table Talk has helped bring consistency to the site. Yes, food will be served, but first and most importantly, volunteers and guests fellowship with one another while digging into the Bible. “The food is great, but the time we spend around the table helps put a bigger emphasis on God and studying the Word. There’s a lot of fellowship here, and people want to learn more about Jesus.” He went on to explain that if we weren’t doing Table Talk, there would be an emptiness. “It would just be us handing out food instead of building relationships and sharing the love of Jesus.”

Simplicity plays a significant role in building relationships and making the gospel accessible to everyone. “Doing Table Talk the way we do feels more natural and simple versus walking into a church. I get to see people from all walks of life come together in an informal setting to talk about the gospel—it’s a more organic give-and-take of conversation that can easily spread to the streets.”

“But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”

TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 3

What is new with Table Talk?

We started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. Last week we visited Smithville to see how the volunteers see the core value of consistency playing out at their site. This week we visited LBA to discuss mercy.

Week 3: Mercy, LBA Site

No one deserves Jesus; His salvation was a gift to us. We are to conduct ourselves in a likewise manner and bring that message of salvation to all who will hear it.

Romans 6:23 says: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • The Gift of God is that he paid the price, the wage, for your sin.

Romans 5:8 says: But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  • “While we were still sinners…” We didn’t need to get perfect first.

Romans 10:9 says: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

  • Have you done this?

We asked everyone to consider: How will you share the good news of God’s mercy at the site and throughout the week?

Here’s some of what our LBA volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

Caleb

For many guests, coming to a weekly site is their only encounter with God—this is their church experience for the week. So, our volunteers must remember why they are there, and that is the purpose of Table Talk. Caleb said, “I enjoy Table Talk. It focuses the night; sometimes you get here and get straight to prep work and forget that we’re here to serve Jesus, so Table Talk helps recenter you.”

Seeing the things we learn being lived out each week by guests and volunteers helps strengthen our desire to serve and share the gospel. “Since I started volunteering last August, I’ve seen a lot more people get involved. Actually, a lot more of the kids have started engaging during Table Talk. When the Teen Challenge boys are here, they are very active in the Table Talk discussions.”

Society’s impression of homeless people is that they don’t deserve anything; coming to the site and feeding people physically and spiritually is how the volunteers extend God’s mercy and compassion to our guests. “I don’t look at us serving as mercy; I see it as serving Jesus.“

Caleb sees serving at the LBA site as living out what Jesus called us to do: love others as Christ loves us. “Coming to the site each week is my weekly spiritual recharge, so I really love coming out here.”

Carol

Each week, there is something new to learn. Table Talk is framed in a way that is easily accessible to anyone listening and encourages engagement with each other. Carol said, “I learn something every single week during Table Talk; it’s like having a Bible study that gets us ready to serve.” She explained how she believes the guests’ comfort is part of their willingness to engage with the volunteers. “When we talk with guests in their cars, I think there’s a comfort there—they’re in their own element, so there’s still a sense of control. So, it feels like they’re more open to hearing what you share about Jesus.”

“At the LBA site, I think we get good engagement because people are comfortable—they know they don’t have to speak up, so when they do, you know it’s because their minds are truly curious. It’s outside the church’s four walls—that’s our impact; we’re going out into the community to spread the gospel and love of Jesus.”

When you see the spiritual growth of returning guests or volunteers, it strengthens the view of the importance of Table Talk. “I’ve gotten to see volunteers and guests grow spiritually through our Table Talk discussions—asking questions and providing insights—it’s been really amazing to see. It shows that they’re reading their Bibles and really questioning things.”

When we discussed the topic of mercy, we realized that none of us are deserving of God’s love or gift of eternal life, but because Jesus willingly took upon our sins and died for us, we are all offered the free gift of eternal life with God. Part of living a life in service of God is that we get to extend that love and grace to others. Carol shared, “We all deserve so much less than we receive. As volunteers, we don’t really deserve the happiness we get from being out here serving the community, but God gives it to us anyway.“

Jeremy

Jeremy discussed why he believes Table Talk is an integral component of the function of our weekly sites. “Table Talk gets you ready to serve; it’s straight from scripture, so it prepares your heart and mind to go out and serve—you’re recentered and remember the Feed the Need’s mission. Without Table Talk, being out here wouldn’t be the same. Without the spiritual refresher starting off the night, we would just be out here passing out food. We need the reminder of why we’re here. Table Talk invites God into everything we’re doing and helps us bring Jesus into our conversations with our guests.”

As we discussed God’s mercy, we are all very aware that because of our innate sin, none of us are deserving of God’s mercy and grace—but Jesus was sent to earth to bridge the gap between sin and God. Jeremy shared how he sees mercy playing a vital role at the LBA site. “Without mercy, I wouldn’t be here. I definitely didn’t deserve for anyone to take the time to tell me about Jesus, and now I get to pay it forward. Some of our guests don’t feel like they deserve to be receiving free meals, or some even feel like they don’t deserve to be living. But we get to show them mercy and tell them that God loves them. We get to show them that we’re a bunch of nobodies, just like them, but we get to show them we care by sharing the love we’ve found through Jesus with them.”

“But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me…”

TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 2

What is new with Table Talk?

We started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. Last week we visited Stony Point to see how the volunteers see the core value of Jesus playing out at their site. This week we visited Smithville to discuss consistency.

Week 2: Consistency, Smithville Site

No matter where we are, everything we do must stay consistent in order to spread the mission and advance the vision of feeding people physically and spiritually. How do we stay true to this not only at our sites but with those we do life with? Here was the challenge for this week:

  1. We learned that harmony is a synonym for consistency. So, we asked, “What does it mean to have Harmony with Jesus (and with others)?” And,  “What would it look like if all our volunteers and guests had true harmony?”
  2. We asked everyone to consider this: How are you being consistent?

Here’s some of what our Smithville volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

Marion

Marion shared that when she first started volunteering with Feed the Need Missions, the main focus was on the physical need being providing—it was more self-focused. But as the weeks go on, she has seen the guests become more genuine, and they have gotten more involved with Table Talk. “The physical need began fading as the primary reason for returning to the site each week. That is the defining shift that has occurred in Smithville.”

She also discussed how the guided questions within Table Talk has helped her engage with others more, which has started deepening her relationships with the volunteers and the guests. She also credits the Tangen family with modeling effective ways of engaging with others. “They have provided so much consistency in how they express genuine love and care for the people here—they’re always engaged with everyone. They know how to pull people in, and I’m trying to learn from that because that doesn’t come naturally to me. I know there will come a time when I will feel more confident engaging with people where I can sit down at the table with them and have a meaningful conversation.”

Asher

Asher is one of our teens who consistently serves each week–wherever he is needed. He talked about how he has seen the guests talking and engaging more during Table Talk instead of just the volunteers, and how that shows that they are truly listening to what is being discussed. “I think the impact of being consistent with Table Talk and discussing salvation has people thinking more about how God is working in their lives.”

He explained how he has learned that you can’t judge someone’s relationship with God based solely on their body language or lack of participation. Even though someone may appear disengaged, they will eventually show you they are paying attention. “Sometimes, you’ll see someone nodding to something being said or saying something that shows that the things we discuss around the table are sinking in; when it’s easy to understand, it helps us share what we’ve learned with others.”

“I’ve also learned that there’s always two right answers to anything: Either Feed the Need or Jesus.”

Heather

Heather explained how the questions during Table Talk have been very useful in leading into conversations with guests. “I’ve had several instances where I’ve been really excited to expand on the questions with guests, which have led to some of the most meaningful conversations.”

She also talked about how consistency at the site, from set up to engaging with guests as orders are being taken, has let to building community through a meal and a time of devotion. “It’s been really cool to see the regular guests who consistently get here early every week to be part of Table Talk. It’s also been amazing to see guests, who you think aren’t listening, prove that it is really sinking in when you have a conversation with them or just seeing their hearts softening—I think a lot of that comes from the consistency of our volunteers—and we’re all participating in Table Talk together.”

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

TABLE TALK: CORE VALUES – WEEK 1

What is Table Talk?

Table Talk is how Feed the Need Missions feeds hungry souls. Our interactive discipleship time takes place at our sites every week, where we provide free meals for anyone who joins us. Table Talk includes a practical, Gospel-centered devotion with discussion questions to encourage interaction and relationship development among our volunteers and guests.

What is new with Table Talk?

This week, we started a new Table Talk series covering all six of Feed the Need Missions’ core values: Jesus, Consistency, Stewardship, Servant Leadership, Mercy, and Simplicity. As a staff, we realized that each one of our Central Texas sites boldly embodies these core values, so for the next six weeks, we will highlight one of our sites and see how our volunteers see that core value playing out at their site.

Week 1: Jesus, Stony Point Site

He is the heart of why we serve. He is the model for how we serve each other as well as those he has called us to serve. Jesus modeled for us how to serve, and in Matthew 6:9-14 He said, Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, holy be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others of their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their offenses, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.”

Here’s some of what our Stony Point volunteers had to say about how Table Talk has impacted them personally and how it’s impacting their site.

Sean

“Table Talk takes you out of the busy work and helps remind us why we’re here. It’s helping our guests realize that they can come here and have their souls nourished as well as their bodies, and there’s definitely been an uptick in the number of guests who are partaking in Table Talk regularly.”

Ben

“Our weekly Table Talk has guests curious, so when they join us, they see that we’re serious about studying the Word of God, and that helps us plant seeds. Table Talk has greatly affected our church. This last Sunday, one of our regular guests, who we have kept inviting to church, finally showed up. We have other guests who have shown up, too– they want to be part of what’s going on out here.”

“Being a part of Feed the Need Missions has opened me up enough to get involved with other missions that serve local communities; serving at the site teaches us generosity.”

Debbie

“Table Talk is making me think more about my actions, like, I need to be reading my Bible more, and I need to be sharing the gospel more. It’s making me aware of what I really need to be doing. It’s also helping get to know others–who they are and what they think.”

“Today, I talked to a couple who joined Table Talk for the first time, and they told me how much they enjoyed being part of it. We made sure they knew they were welcome to join every week.”

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
